Redford's right hand

My wife and I love this movie, mainly because of the time period and "inside view" of the world of con men.

One thing we've noticed after numerous viewings is Redford holds his right hand very strangely. Notice when he reaches in his jacket pocket for Lonegan's pinched wallet; he holds it with his middle 2 fingers rather than a normal grip.

You can also notice it when he picks up his coffee mug at the diner.

What happened? Did Hooker injure himself earlier in the movie, and we're just missing it? Was it a deleted scene? Or did Redford have an actual injury?

Next time you watch the movie, pay attention to this and let me know if I'm just losing my mind!

reply

No, you're not losing your mind.

This is something I noticed right off, and I've always wondered about it.

The early bird may get the worm, but it's the second mouse that gets the cheese.

I noticed it to and it really bugs me for some reason. Also look how he holds his fork while eating the Blue Plate Special, just before he meets Loretta.

I was a kid when this movie came out and my sister loved Robert Redford. I know more about him and this movie than I would ever want to.
He broke his thumb prior to making the movie. He does not bend it but keeps it extended throughout the movie.

reply

Wow....i didnt know about the thumb...that would explain..i was wondering if he was trying to hold the cards with some type of 1920's affectation..but a broken thumb explains it all.

Wow. Redford's thumb, Shaw's ankle. Did anyone NOT get injured prior to filming this movie?! :^D

I watched this last night, and I also noticed that Redford seemed to hold his right hand awkwardly in some scenes; a little stiffly. Thanks for the background info.

reply

I wonder why he didn't just use his left hand in those scenes....?

reply

Thanks for the information!

I've watched this film at least 40 times in the last 30 odd years, and only just recently did I notice this handicap during the scene where he puts the two photos of the two hitmen that killed Matolla in the breast pocket of his shirt!

I just thought it was Redford purposely adding a flaw into the character's makeup, but thanks to your info I am more the wiser.

Of course it also proves I would suck at being a detective if it took me 40 odd viewings to actually spot that, lol

Cheers

And I looked & I beheld a pale horse & the name that sat on him was Death & Hell followed with him.

"40 times in the last 30 odd years", really? Are you sure?

Wow just saw that scene as I was reading your post, LOL!

"Vive la mort, vive la guerre, vive le sacre mercenaire."

The past couple days I've been reacquainting myself with this film, and I noticed the same thing in the exact same scenes. I was going to post asking this question but it looks as though there may not be answer, other than that a couple people working on this film ended up with an injury.

reply

Sorry for not checking back sooner! Thanks to all for the confirmation, and the info!!

reply

couple of, for God's sake! Of, of, of!

That whole hand thing bugged me too. Especially when he first goes into Henry's room to meet him. He also had this habit of holding his elbows out and rolling his shoulders a lot, like he was uncomfortable wearing a suit coat and tie.

reply

I noticed it, too. I always assumed it was one of those actor's Affectations that they wouold use to make the part a little more personal or to call attention to themselves (It worked here, too, didn't it?).
If you want to see this kind of move played to the hilt, watch the movie "The Magnificent Seven." Steve McQueen pulls every trick in the book to call attention to himself:
He's in the background spinning his hat (He's not a major part of the the scene)
He shakes the shotgun shells before loading the gun(not necessary)
He shades his eyes with his hat when he gets on the hearse.
He carries the biggest pistol of all the gunfighters (notice it doesn't fit in the holster right)

I always thought he hurt his hand when Snyder was beating him up.

I just watched it again. His finger seems fine until the fight in the alley with Snyder. After he gets thrown into the boxes you can see that he can't use it properly.

Redford's right hand is so noticeable that I noticed it the first time I saw the movie and I've noticed it every time I've seen the movie since then.

I always thought it was an affectation, especially the way he holds his coffee cup with his thumb sticking up instead of helping to support the cup.

In the second meeting scene where the guys are discussing what con to use, Redford is almost sucking that thumb. He has it up against his lips during much of the scene.

In the train scenes (walking down the train corridor and then leaving the train station after the ride is over), Redford's left arm is swinging down at his side normally but he's got his right hand out in front of him (frozen in a position that protects his thumb).

His hand is so frozen that it almost looks like a prosthetic.

Redford looks cool while doing all this, though.

I love this movie!

Yep. It's from the alley fight.

Hooker's hand was injured by broken glass and smashed in the hinged doors when Snyder busted into the telephone booth Hooker was in. Before that encounter Hooker's hand was normal.
