Jack High???

Okay, we know Lonnegan switched the decks in the last hand on the train, but how in the world did Shaw switch decks when all eyes were on him in that room? How was that humanly possible? I know he planned to "win" all along and he definitely cheated, but how in the world did no one notice? Especially Lonnegan!!

Shaw (Gondorf) did not switch decks, he just switched cards. He was probably palming cards in one hand and slyly switched them shortly after drawing replacement cards. I believe he took out a new cigarette and lit it around that time which would act as a distraction to anyone looking. He also kept is cards held very close to his chest so the goon sitting behind him (the one who set the deck) could not see.

Ray Walston says: He plays with a Tally Ho Circle and a Tally Ho Fan, I got you one of each. He likes the cold deck low 8's or 9's.

1. He actually would need 4 decks, since both of these come in red and blue,
but he had the 4 jacks hand ready to switch.

2. Cold deck does not mean a bad run of cards, it means a deck which has been manipulated. Cold deck low, means he would get 4 of a kind ( threes ) and lose to a higher 4 of a kind, 8's or 9's, that's why he had the other decks so he could integrate his 4 jacks no matter which deck was being used.

Just hoping no one else also had a jack in THEIR hands. Right.

There is another thread that calculates the possibilities of someone else having a jack.

I've seen it. It's just incredible that the whole sting hinged on no one else having a jack in their hand.

Weren't they the only two playing that last hand? Or at least everyone else folded. It didn't matter if someone had a jack or not. If anything had come to light both Lonnegan and Shaw would have been exposed as cheaters which is why Lonnegan kept his mouth shut..."What was I supposed to do? Accuse him of cheating better than me?"

reply

There were 3 people in the final hand, but the 3rd person folded before the draw.
"What do you want ( whatever his name was ) to get?"
"Nothing. I want him out of there fast, I'm going to bust that bookie in one play."

The third player could have had a jack. Which he may have forgotten because he had a pile of crap and folded quickly, and even if he remembered he may have wanted to see Lonnegan get beat and said nothing.

Where would he hide/store them after he palmed them?

Am only asking because you guys scrabbler/white fury seem to know a lot more about these things than me. I just accepted that he was a very clever card shark and could do these things.

Well he had to have the 4 jacks in 4 different card types ( 2 diff types of cards that Lonnegan used ( he plays the Tally Ho Circle and the Tally Ho Fan, I got you one of each) and each one of those comes in red and blue,) stashed all over his body depending on which deck he was going to use for the cold deck.
So maybe inside his vest there were some areas designed to hold the cards, and then he just switched the 4 threes with the 4 jacks in the same pocket.
If you watch the scene they don't show him making the switch, but his face gives away some clues and he seems to be fiddling a little bit with his hands.

If you ask a card expert he won't tell you.
