There are some suave and subtle messages in the movie, but the movie has dated. Modern viewers won't get the message, or misperceive it, or let the foreground antics completely distract from the message...
I do prefer his slapstick stuff, though - "Annie Hall" was a turning point, and it is an all-time classic, but his later stuff just lacks the hilarious sparkle. He's a genius, but he could get away with more thanks to the injection of humor.

Same here. I thought it was amusing and entertaining, but hardly a masterpiece.
For instance much as I appreciate Woody Allen's love of jazz and his skill as a musician, I felt this score just didn't suit the content and narrative of this particular Allen film.
