Overrated
It was funny, but not hilarious as everyone is saying. The very similar Woody Allen film, "Bananas" was much much funnier, but it never gets any play. Probably Woody's most underrated film.

shareNo.

Oh, you're right, I forgot. It's not how funny a film really is, it's how funny you're supposed to think it is. You guys are right.

Gotta agree with you, jeklow. I've seen it and was a bit disappointed.
On the other hand, I'm not a Woody Allen fan. Most of his movies that I've seen eventually degenerate into some sort of a "look how much sped-up fun we can have in New York City" montage.
Hey--I love Woody just as much as the next guy but for some reason all I could get out of Sleeper were a few chuckles here and there, to my dismay
I don't know if it's just me or if it really is 'overrated'
I just saw it for the first time, watching it in three stretches over the last few days on the DVR. It aired on Dish Network's Blockbuster channel. I thought it was hilarious, myself. I laughed so hard in some of the scenes, harder than I've laughed at a movie in a very long time, and it felt great. I especially laughed a lot at the scene where Miles had on the silver inflatable suit.
I think this is only one Woody Allen movie I've seen in its entirety. I don't remember what the other one was that I saw, but I don't recall any slapstick comedy in it, and I'm a big fan of slapstick. Sleeper reminded me of a Mel Brooks movie.
What someone finds funny depends not only upon his/her individual sense of humor, but his/her mood at the time a particular movie is encountered. This caveat aside, I personally find Sleepers much funnier than Bananas. This may be because I find the humor in Bananas a little sophmoric, with Allen's skills not yet fully developed, or it may be because Sleepers is somewhat of an homage to earlier comedy acts which I also enjoy, such as the Marx Brothers and Abbot and Costello. Regardless, there is no "right answer" to the question of which is better, except that perhaps you should catch Bananas whenever you can, and I should do the same for Sleepers! lol

Sleeper is good, Bananas is good, both are rather sophomoric in my opinion, but then no one did that form better than Allen. The jumps and skips and pseudo-cultural references that he seemed to think of as life in New York were worth many chuckles over the years. Another of his films at that level, one not mentioned much, is Take The Money And Run, another film that, since I never expect much from it, always eases the tension of the daily grind.
Actually I think is "underrated" rather than "overrated", but then it was not as well-known over here in the UK
shareI don't think it's underrated or overrated. It's simply "there". Comedy fans don't like it much, and die hard Woody fans, don't regard it highly. It's just a mildly funny Woody film. It's not offensive, it's simply not great.
Though, when you release one film a year (how many has he directed now? 50?), it's amazing even his weaker efforts like this, are worth watching.
Last film seen: Robert Bresson's Pickpocket - Brilliant!

I don't know, it's named as one of the top 50 comedies by Premiere, and a lot of people here seem to like it. i didn't really, it started out so strong when he was banging into people with the wheelchair, and then it just petered off into a bad Marx Bros. movie. I love the Marx Brothers and I just saw this is an inferior in every way to their madcap hilarity.

it's not overrated. Its very very veyr funny and ingenious :)
shareI own the DVD and watch it at least once a year. I don't think it's "overrated", contrary, I think it's underrated and doesn't get that much attention.

I thought I was going to hate it too. I have seen almost all of Woody Allen's films, but I was avoiding this one for some reason. But I actually enjoyed it. Yeah, some of it is a bit dated but I laughed. The one Woody film I always found overrated was Manhattan. Please!
shareLove and eath is an incomparable masterpiece in comparison with this. I appreciate some gags but i find it a bit disappointing
