Is this film related to "The French Connection"? I always believed it was, but based on the character's name, it's not.
Just seems similar to me.

It is widely argued that The Seven-Ups is a quasi sequel or spin-off of The French Connection. Roy Scheider character is pretty much the same in The French Connection that being based on the exploits of real NYC detective Sonny Grosso. His name in The French Connection is Cloudy Russo while in The Seven-Ups, its Buddy Manucci. Also Tony Lo Bianco appears a mobster in both films and Bill Hickman agains performs the great car chases. There is also another film that is related to The French Connection and that is Badge 373. It stars Robert Duvall as a a tough cop who is clearly modelled off the real-life French Connection cop, Eddie Egan. Then of course there is the true sequel to the original French Connection, the underrated French Connection 2. -Eric
