I don't see how you can overlook Detroit 9000 (a motor city mirror of Across 110th St.) and the first 2 Shaft movies (although they're not as gritty as one would like). Another, not great, is the Organization. Man, I could live on these!
Great stuff! They sure can't match those movies with the junk that studios crank out today. I would add The Friends of Eddie Coyle, Crazy Joe, The Anderson Tapes, The Stone Killer, Magnum Force, and McQ. We can also give honorable mention to Brannigan, Blazing Magnum, and Busting.
Taxi Driver The 7-Up's The French Connection Dirty Harry & Magnum Force *(obviously The 1st 2 Godfather movies) Dillinger Chinatown Mean Streets French Connection II The Hot Rock The Getaway The Sting
Man, what a great thread. It's helping me out through my biannual deepdiscountdvd 20% off binge.
A couple more: From Alain Silver's Film Noir (older edition): The Split Hickey & Boggs The Nickel Ride The Kremlin Letter A couple I own: Night Moves Hustle Madigan
I would add: Some of the less sureal Blaxplotation films such as Bucktown A couple I've only read about: SuperCops and the Big Fix A personal fave, a little more subdued: Klute
I hope the third or so of the films listed here that aren't out make it to DVD in some decent form. A year or two I wouldn't have thought so, but after stuff like Warning Shot, it's looking better. Taking chances now on Shamus, The Big Bounce (original) and Brannigan (even after McQ :) ).
I like the riffin' on Donald Westlake, on location, Quinn Martin level production values, free love fading, post watergate, non-PC to the extreme on all sides which makes it fresh, and grooving soundtracks!
I'm a fan of all that stuff! Cannon/Kojak/Mitchell all that-pretty good. You have the boats for cars/big side burns/shot on site/bad grimy look to the film/bad plaid business suits/Charles Bronson Sideburns/Car chases. All pretty good. Charley Varrick is a good one.
Charley Varrick The Outfit (Where's the dvd?!) French Connection (both of them) Mr Majestic Walking Tall Point Blank Taking of Pelham 123 The Warriors Death Wish
The French Connection French Connection II Charley Varrick The Laughing Policeman Dirty Harry Magnum Force Death Wish Taxi Driver Assault On Precinct 13 Vigilante Force
COTTON COMES TO HARLEM THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123 THE GETAWAY THE FRENCH CONNECTION CHARLEY VARRICK FAREWELL, MY LOVELY (pretty much forgotten, but one of Mitchum's best roles) ACROSS 110TH STREET DIRTY HARRY/MAGNUM FORCE/THE ENFORCER (I consider this trilogy to be "as one.") THE LONG GOODBYE DEATH WISH
Further viewing, taking a little liberty with the decade/dates, but in keeping with the genre (thanks go to JDCantwell):
The Onion Field ('79) Cruising ('80) The New Centurions ('72) Fort Apache, The Bronx ('81) Electra Glide in Blue ('74) Fighting Back ('82) The Yakuza ('75) Hardcore ('79) Mikey & Nicky ('76)
They're not American, but I always thought Kinji Fukasaku's ("Battle Royale") gritty Yakuza flicks were the absolute best neo-realist crime flicks to come out of the 70s. If you can get your hands on them, I'd recommend: - The Yakuza Papers (all five movies) - Yakuza Graveyard (my personal favorite) - Street Mobster - Cops vs. Thugs - Graveyard of Honor - Sympathy for the Underdog (to a lesser extent)
