Great chase scene or a hack of Bullitt?

No soundtrack just motors roaring, chase occurs in both highway and city, same driver in bad guys car. The way this scene was cut, it seems to me that the director was a fan of the classic Bullit chase scene done in 1968.

Great movie overall though.

The director was the producer of Bullitt. As well as The French Connection. The same driver (Bill Hickman) designed all three chases, and appears in all three movies. THIS, in my opinion, is the best of the three.

you ain't kidding. I never noticed Bill Hickman as the driver/actor in both movies, but there he is. I have to give this movie another watch before I decide.

Wikipedia says: "Everything is rendered to painstaking detail, the gritty realism and danger of each tire-busting slide, accompanied by close camera angles and camera-cars moving at high speed, parallel to the action car, added to which an almost complete lack of dialogue and music. Location shooting was done in upper Manhattan, on the George Washington Bridge, and on the Palisades and Taconic parkways."

But once they get off the GW Bridge, you're on the Palisades Interstate Parkway....the Taconic is nowhere NEAR the PIP, unless you count the last exit on the PIP (near West Point) which is 30 miles north.

They are driving along the PIP right off to the GWB and 30 seconds later they're showing scenery for the Taconic. I think they must have switched venues hoping that non-NY'ers wouldn't notice. Maybe they had trouble getting permits for the PIP which is busier than the Taconic (esp. near the GWB).

The Seven-Ups is definitely great, I'd give the edge to the French connection with its sniper/foot chase THEN the car chasing the train with a real car crash to boot in the movie. Will never see the real stuff again, when there is stunt driving, it's with guys trolling through cartoon flame balls or away from a giant explosion on a green screen

Car chases have been so done to death that there are very few that stand out above the crowd- for a more "modern" take that I like very much are the ones in RONIN (1998).

Bill Hickman must be in the Hall of Fame of stunt driving..however..to me Bullit was the all time best followed by the French Connection and then this film..the chases in Bullit and this film were too much alike..and like Bullit they used cuts from different sections of the City and then edited it like 1 continuous scene..which I don't believe happened in TFC..where I do think it was a continuous stretch of roadway..I love chase scenes though and again I really admire Bill Hickman..
