Enjoyable But Flawed

Checked this movie and it's prequel on TCM two weeks ago because they were just movies I thought I needed to see just to say that I did because I always try to watch Black-themed movies when I get the chance. The movie had its flaws mainly due to the obvious budget constraints but William Marshall's performance along with the sexy ladies in the movie made it a good hour and a half well-spent.

The story had some good themes that with a better budget could have been more fully explored especially how Mam because of his plans being foiled renounced his original name and accepted what he now was, a vampire. Good stuff and it's a shame Mr. Marshall never became a better known actor because he had a gravitas on the screen that blew his co-stars out of the water.

But I gotta tell you, the costumes and music are too much. (MILD SPOILER ALERT) My parents used to have parties like the one seen early in this movie (well, without the vampire attack).

Tell us more about your parents parties. What African artifacts did they collect and showcase?

Flawed!?!? How dare you!

Really! Can't you just say you liked the movie without having to qualify it with "flawed" and "limited budget"? What's budget got to do with whether or not a movie has good ideas, writing and acting talent? It's OK to like what you like, no need to make excuses for it.

Unfortunately, the amount of a budget does have an effect on how a film looks, whether it's able to even have decent special effects, develop its ideas fully and clearly enough to get them across,or even get decent acting talent sometimes. It's true that excellent writing, clever ideas, and good to great acting can surpass any low budget----I've seen way more than enough low-budget films to know that's the case. In fact, I've seen a good many low-budget films that were far better than some of these Hollywood big-budget films that get pumped out on the regular. The bigger the budget is, the better the look and special effects---the smaller the budget, the more restricted the things you can do with a film are. That hasn't stopped any good films fro being made throughout the history of film, though, and thankfully.

Hey - it's an American International (AI) flick! Being flawed is a requirement!

SCTV did a spoof on AI many years ago, calling the studio "Miracle" Pictures. Their catch-phrase was "If it's a good movie, it's a Miracle."

By the way - I love every AI movie ever made!

I really wish they would've made more while William Marshall was alive. This could've been a great vampire franchise that would rival the Hammer Dracula series. But the two films we got are still very good.

I enjoyed it as is.

That scene were he drinks blood from that first victim - a vampire O face if there was ever was one.

The idea of him being like Jekyll and Hyde was a nice touch as was the ambiguous ending.

This one and the first stand right up there with the Hammer vampire movies in my books.
