I find it funny Phil Harris was in three straight disney movies

Jungle Book, Aristocats and this one.

Yes, I was never a fan of his voice, and the fact that he played the exact same character basically throughout the three films didn't particularly help. I'm glad they didn't bring him back for The Rescuers as had been considered; he would have ruined the mood of that film.

He is a one-act man. His characters in all three Disney films are essentially the same thing. His humor would not have fit into the 1977 without ruining it.

Baloo's death in The Jungle Book should have been different. It was the perfect opportunity to add some emotion to a film that was completely dry of it, but they chose to turn it into another comic scene just so Phil Harris could have the last joke.

So, querido Taran, are you saying that Baloo should have been..."Killed Off For Real" (as T.V. Tropes would say), as opposed to having a "Disney Death" (ANOTHER trope)?

Interesting... No, "The Jungle Book" was an interesting film with good songs and some cool characters, but you're right that it would've been...interesting to kill Baloo off, without bringing him back...

Rumor has it that an old screenplay for the film WOULD'VE killed Baloo off... Maybe I'll write a script with Baloo dying just to please the *beep* outta a hard-to-please-Disneywise-person like yourself...

"The Jungle Book" was by no means an interesting film. The "plot" which is nearly non-existent is as exciting and complex as a two-by-four. Some of the characters are okay, but without a good, solid plot to tie them together, they each felt like a protagonist in their own little segments in repetition, until the long-awaited "The End." The songs are okay in taste for some, frankly, not my cup of tea.

Yes, Baloo's death would have added some needed heartache and intensity into an overall bland production. I frankly could not have cared less for the protagonist, whether he was brought to the Man Village or not, or whether Shere Khan killed him. I just wasn't drawn by Mowgli, and the one scene that actually moved me was completely ruined.

It's not the same thing as Trusty from Lady and the Tramp (1955). That film had an engaging plot and very likable protagonists. There was no need for additional heartache or drama, so Trusty's death was unnecessary. The Jungle Book, on the other hand, needed some spark in many places.

Ahem. When I said "The Jungle Book" WAS an interesting film, I was stating MY personal opinion. You, being the know-it-all that you are, seem to think YOUR opinion is the ONLY opinion people can have. Frankly, not true. I, for one, seem to ONLY agree with you on two things:

1. "The Rescuers" (1977) is a great film.
2. "The Rescuers 2: Down Under" (1990) was inferior, and completely overrated.

That's all I can think of at the moment, but there may be a slim amount more. Either way, no amount of you belittling my (and others') opinions is going to make us agree with YOUR odd ways and insistings.

P.S. YOU can have your own opinions...but, again, other people can think otherwise.

reply

Think what you want. I don't make opinions without backing them up with good reasons, which I believe I did here.

And he was going to be in The Rescuers too. But then they decided to go with fewer comical characters and his was either recast or eliminated.

Interestingly, Louis Prima was going to be in it too. He'd recorded songs for the film and everything, but then he slipped into a coma following surgery for a brain tumor and never woke up until his death in 1978, so whoever his character was going to be was also removed.

reply

Louis Prima's character (apparently) would've been a bear in a zoo. As for the Phil Harris character, I have no idea...

reply

Odd they didn't get Phil to play the bear.

This just in: as I suspected, Phil Harris ALLEGEDLY, according to CartoonBrew.com, would've been a BULLFROG in the Bayou in the finalized film, before ultimately being cut, alas. As for him not voicing Louie the Bear, they probably thought that, having voiced Baloo and Little John, previously, they wanted to give someone else (i.e. Louis Prima) a chance to voice an animated bear.

And where does that information come from?

Interesting. I hate to sound mean, but I'm THRILLED both actors/performers were cut from the film, as well as that collection of forgettable songs, almost as dull as the sung soundtrack to "One Hundred and One Dalmatians."

Well, come on now. Part of the reason Louis Prima was removed was because he went into a coma. I would have preferred for him to be removed under different circumstances.

I know, I know... it's just that you have this terrible habit of sometimes sounding extremely condescending.

Well, that's when I feel very strongly about something. Concerning someone's unfortunate death, it would be unethical and inconsiderate for me to say, "I'm glad he died because his work would have ruined the movie." In honesty, I feel his work would have ruined the movie, but that's no reason to be happy that the man had to die. Even though I'm sure his work would have been discarded regardless.

What Weird_Raptor has against me doesn't bother me in the least. He's obsessive and immature and his arguments are based on those things. He takes criticism towards 'his' film personally and his behavior is just ridiculous. He's right when he says I 'provoke' him on purpose. I do; and it's quite easy to do.

Isn't he, though?

Personally, I think either Louis Prima OR Phil Harris may actually have had an interesting presence in "The Rescuers". And considering that, from what I've heard, Harris was supposed to have voiced a bullfrog member of the Swamp Folks, and that many of the Swamp Folk in the finished film have barely any onscreen time or dialogue (most of which occurs towards the film's climax), I seriously doubt his presence would've TOTALLY "ruined" the film, even for old Taran.

Granted, had Louis Prima been in the film, his role would've been larger, as a zoo bear, named "Louie" (kinda ironic, in a way, that they didn't have Harris voicing the bear, but since he had previously voiced both Baloo AND Little John, I guess they decided to give someone else a chance at the role...), but still, concept art on some of Huston Huddleston (son of songwriter Floyd Huddleston)'s YouTube videos suggests PENNY would've appeared in the "Louie the Bear" version of the film. That would've been cool to see Penny with the bear (much like Mowgli and Baloo in "The Jungle Book").

To be honest, while Shelby Flint's songs in the final film are BEAUTIFUL, I can't help but also love the Louis Prima songs which were written for the film's early conception ("Peoplitis" and "Sittin' in My Favorite Position Doin' Nothin'" are AWESOMELY catchy songs; I even got the MP3 files from YouTube and listen to them on my iPod ALL THE TIME NOW!!!)

However, at least having Phil Harris in a (presumably) minor role in the finished film wouldn't have been TOO unbearable, would it've, T.W.2? (Remember, it could've been CHEECH MARIN).
