I was shocked Robin Hood got this rating and I thought it was one of Disney's best movies. Yes it's a Disney film and aimed towards children but adult viewers should not get bent out of shape because there was nothing for them in the movie in the form of entertainment like in other Disney films. It was far better than the Black Cauldron which I felt was too scary and dark for children. Thoughts? anybody else?
The reason why Robin Hood was not popular with critics can be linked to many things; for one thing, the lack of effort in its visuals and writing is obvious throughout. Yes, it's entertaining and cute, but its storyline and plot are based on a very thin, weak structure. There's little here that makes this adaptation different or special when compared to other "Robin Hood" adaptations. Disney's films used to outdue what had been done before, but this fell flat. Considering the standards of Disney quality had been rising throughout decades, Robin Hood might have come across as a very steep turn downwards (the same way Saludos Amigos might have seemed following Bambi).
I think Robin Hood is a pretty solid film, but it certainly doesn't stake a claim as a landmark film of any sort. It seems like cement on that gap between Bedknobs and Broomsticks and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.
Yes, the ratings for Disney's '70s films on this site are trully... interesting. I guess Robin Hood, and I assume this from reading the most 'praiseful' reviews, holds a ridiculously high average score due to people finding it entertaining (as well as nostalgic attachment), rather than quality.
The ratings for Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Pete's Dragon and The Rescuers, though rapidly increasing from month to month are criminally low. I guess every live-action/animation Disney films following was 1964 was expected to be another Mary Poppins, or else just no good. In either case, as much as I loved Disney's 1964 film, Bedknobs and Broomsticks will always win (not by a lanslide, but still).
Luckily, critics, though harsh on Disney's earlier '70s efforts (and I'm including Robin Hood on this), gave Bedknobs and Broomsticks more recognition, though far from enough.
In my opinion, the creativity shown in Bedknobs and Broomsticks is excellent, and the film easily outdoes Mary Norton's novel, which I found to be extremely dull. The WWII setting and the storyline are part of a tree grown from a seed planted by Norton.
Hey, I agree with you on Bedknobs--I found the books in the library about a year ago, and they were dull, dull, DULL. And as you may have seen on that Animation thread, I do differentiate between a film's quality and enjoyability.
Supermodels...spoiled stupid little stick figures mit poofy lips who sink only about zemselves.
Yes, I own a copy of "Bed-knob and Broomstick," the edition that combines both stories, and I had a hard time turning its pages. The characters and the plot were so insufferably dull I just have to roll my eyes whenever I read someone commenting that the film did not do justice to the books. The movie gave the books all of the life and soul they did not have!
I did see the thread, and though I agree with you, I think "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" is not only enjoyable, but it is also high-quality entertainment. Both it and "Pete's Dragon" are cheapened in outlook by the poor condition of their released masters; though that can be said for every single one of the '70s films.
Personally, I think it is a fair rating. Curse and hate me if you like, but honestly I don't see why so many people find it so good. It's not a BAD film, but it's not really a good one either... and certainly nowhere near as good as some of Disney's greater, much more memorable films like Pinocchio or The Lion King (just to name a few).
...Perhaps a 60% average score might be more appropriate, but definitely not above 70%.
Yes it's a Disney film and aimed towards children but adult viewers should not get bent out of shape because there was nothing for them in the movie in the form of entertainment like in other Disney films.
What the...? Who are you to say that there is nothing in this movie for adult viewers?
