Should've just gone full faux-documentary

The sequences of the film where it's just narration over ant footage are by far the best, and if the film had just gone with that faux-documentary approach, it might have been something. But when it tries to have characters and something of a plot, it falls pretty flat--why, for example, show the growing injury to Hubbs' hand, when it doesn't impact the story in any real way? And are we meant to care about Lesko or Kendra? They're not much more than ciphers.
