Question about the ending

Spoilers

where were they at the end? i know they were still on the island , but where they still imprisoned? if so why were they not behind bars like everyone elsE?

reply

They were on Devils Island which was supposedly escape-proof. it was isolated and prisoners were forced to live alone.

reply

the warden does say something like

"the waves and sea do all the work so we take it easy"

reply

The prisoners had served their terms, and repatriating them back to France wasn't an option, so they ended up living on the island as 'free men' imprisoned on an island they could never leave.

reply

they had served out their terms of imprisonment,, they were given a choice, eitehr be head hunters,, or colonists.. they chose the latter.
are you going to bark all day little doggie,, or are you going to bite

reply

The warden said they serve time as a colonist equal to their prison sentence. So if dega got 15 yrs he'll only serve another 15 on the island, he's not there for life. I felt so bad for dega. He was such a hopeless loser. A wimp whose wife left him, foot was amputated after a mishap, and of course that miserable finale where he's forced to succomb to a pathetic and lonely existence.

That's one of two burning questions I had about Dega after watching this film today. Was his foot amputated? He seemed to be walking around just fine, not even hobbling. At first I thought Papillon was hallucinating when he saw Dega collecting coconuts.

Question #2, exactly how much $ did Dega have stored up in his hoo-hah? It seemed to have lasted for years and years and years...

reply

First question is easy. His foot was amputated. I too noticed that he had no limp later on, and I was puzzled by it. The only answer is, the movie makers did not want to emphasize the limp. But he def had it amputated.

As for Q2, that's the million dollar question. No one knows. But obviously enough to last for years and years and years...

The foot is not amputated. It can be seen clearly wrapped as they approach the beach. Dega's foot becomes infected, possibly gangrenous, and the hot knife is used to cauterise the wound. We don't know how much flesh was removed but it isn't an amputation as such. Dega's wife and attorney were also bribing officials. This presumably is how the warden ended up with a new house. Once the wife and attorney marry, Dega is left with nothing, as Papillon warned him would happen.

His foot was amputated? Do you know that from the book?
