The head in the jar?

When they first arrive off the ship and the doctor is examining them for duties I noticed a jar behind them with a human head in it. I think it was for added effect following a scene of a beheading as it did. I cant for the life of me figure out why a doctor in a tropical penal colony would need such an item?

lol i missed that! Good observation!

When they guillotined someone, the officer would hold the cut off head up and show it the crowd saying JUSTICE IS DONE!

They would put it in a jar with alcohol and send it back to France to prove the execution.

This is info from Papi himself.

Read the book it's fantastic and the movie is nothing compared.

Ive heard the book is fiction and was originally going to be published as fiction, but some guy convinced Papillon to say its a biography.
In reality its a mix of his experiences, others experiences/stories and some imagination thrown in.

I noticed that as well. If it is true ?! Then I guess the nazis weren't the only ones who made horrible things in their prisons.
