Why did the Indians blowdart Papi?

Sorry If it's already been asked/answered but that whole scene confuses me. Like why do they blow dart him in the first place? And why is he taken to their beach? I thought the guards were paying the indians to hunt down escapees. And why do the indians love Papi so much? lol feels like a whole chunk of the film is unexplained.

Great movie though

The Indians with the blow darts are trying to capture Papi. However, when he is darted, he falls into the river, is swept down river, and is obviously taken in by friendly Indians who possibly see him as a God, hence the way they treated him.

Yes an Excellent Movie - a classic! And they don't unfortunately make them like that anymore.

The Indians who blow dart to pepillon are hired by the police and are shown dropped by a police vehicle in the jungle to help capture the fugitive.
