Why Was Degas Banished to French Guiana?

Printing counterfeit money is hardly as terrible as murder.

I think it was mentioned by one of the guards a lot of people lost money because of him, like he caused the market to crash or something. I could be wrong.

As of 2008 in the US, 90% of federal prisoners were non-violent offenders.

1 guy in prison for fraud doesn't seem that unusual.

reply

You're not equating a federal prison with a penal colony, I hope?

It has been a long time, since I last watched this film, but didn't Degas when explaining his crime mention, the Judge over his trail was one who had invested in a lot of Louis' counterfeit bonds?

reply

Degas was not just a funny-money-maker. He was a very damn good counterfeiter. Also, he was prolific.

Odds are that if he kept his activities low, a few francs here or there, maybe something to buy a house with or whatever, he probably would never have been caught with his kind of skills. But, of course, if you can make your own money to the quality he was able to do, then it's tough not to get greedy. Counterfeiters can destroy an economy.

By making false money, you destroy the value of wealth because you are exchanging it with something that has no security. Even in a fiat-currency system you can counterfeit money can undermine faith in the market, makes investors and lenders more nervous about spending their money if they end up getting worthless money in exchange, which further erodes confidence, can cause prices to increase, and put people out of work.

Degas got what he deserved. But, I'd also say he got what he wanted. Security.

Not only that, but why was he sent to Devil's Island? It was generally used to imprison political prisoners.

When I said I wanted to be a comedian, they all laughed at me. Well, they're not laughing now!
