How was Hoffman able to wear those glasses?

I've always wondered how actors are able to wear such thick glasses without going blind or getting a serious headache. I'm guessing the actors first put on contact lenses to balance out the wearing of the glasses. Am I right? I've seen crazy thick glasses in many other movies and TV shows (Twilight Zone being a good example.) How do they do it?

According to the 'Did You Know' segment of this film;

Dustin Hoffman had to wear contact lenses so that he could see correctly through the thick glasses he had to wear.

I'm sure it was torture, much like Morgan Freeman in Driving Miss Daisy.

I think even to this day at age 75, Dustin Hoffman still doesn't wear glasses, except maybe for reading, so maybe he didn't damage his eyes in the movie.

so i'm guessing you also put on contact lenses before you look through a window to balance out the thick window glass, right?
