Papillon gets life for killing a pimp. I can understand a life sentence for murder, but he's so ridiculed for it being a pimp. I can also understand that prostitution was probably legal in France during 1930, but I still don't get it.

Murder is murder. Wasn't self defense. Even today, if you killed the lowest-level scum drug dealer pedophile for no "legally allowable" reason, you'd be charged with murder
