A guy actually tried it on me years ago when I was working in a gas station! I recognized it immediately because of having seen this movie.
shareReally? What happened? Im interested to know how you reacted and stuff.
shareThe gas station near my home has a sign next to the cash register telling cashiers not to make change because of fast-talking con men. Every time I buy gas there, I think of "Paper Moon"!

Years ago, I paid for a $3.25 wash cloth with a 10 dollar bill. She started counting out the change giving quarters making 50, 75 and the next quarter makes $5 and 5 makes 10. She got me that time but whenever it happened again, before they got further past the "dollar amount" I'd interrupt and say, "But it was THREE twenty-five." Not 4.25. The last time was in 1986. IMO I think she was showing the younger clerk how easy it was.
Now the cash registers make the change automatically, it shows up where the customer can see it. And I say it's about time

He lifts me clear to the sky, you know he taught me to fly.
I just saw Paper Moon today..
But the fist time I remember seeing this scam was by actor/magic man Harry Anderson. I think it was as Harry "The Hat" in Cheers.
He'd ask for change then ask the time and ppl's ages to confuse them.
I had it done to me once. I was working in a pizza place and a very large man came in looking for change. I knew at the time I was being had but for $3.50 an hour, I wasn't going to challenge the guy! I gave him what he asked for.
