I love this movie, and have done since I first saw it over a decade ago. Then I was about 15 and didn't fully understand it; now, ten years older, I still don't think I understand it completely--and that's what makes the movie fascinating to me: it's elliptical and trusts that its audience has the intelligence to 'fill in the blanks'.

'100% Right' is a catchphrase I picked up after first watching the movie (it's up there with my most quote favourites, such as 'Nobody loses all the time' from 'Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia'). Now, working in education, when I ask a question and a student responds correctly, I still blurt out '100% right' and slam my finger into the desk for emphasis. People imitate the gesture, but I'm not sure whether many of them know where it's from: the movie seems to be little seen.

Anyway, I'm trying to find the play 'This Story of Yours' by John Hopkins, on which this film is based. I would be grateful if anybody had a link to a bookseller that sold the play.

lewis...
Did you ever find the text of the play ?
If not, there's a copy of Plays and Players magazine from 1969 which has the complete text in it (and a review), on eBay. Here's the link

Penguin did publish the play, but I can't find a secondhand copy anywhere.

Saw it in America in the late 70s & could never erase it from my mind as we're not used to seeing this kind of Connery outside his smily affable hero roles over here. The Offence proved that he's a flexible & accompliced actor who dared to inhabit the dark side against box office tides. Shame many hadn't the chance to see this. DVD producers should now take notice - this is a hidden gem worthy of revisiting.

connery goes places in this film we've never seen of him in other films. a great underrated lumet film.

I just watched it for the first time ever, I'd say this is Connery's best performance EVER. And one of Lumet's top.

reply

The film was very much ahead of its time.

Its that man again!!

A brilliant performance and a brilliant movie.

Yep - I discovered this movie only recently and am very impressed! If only Mr. Connery could have been in more roles like this in his career! I'm grateful that he pushed and worked so hard to get this movie made.
