I don't know. Perhaps that it "was" so great a film that the entirety of his family went to see it, as opposed to only some family members of his. That's what I'd put my money on, or your first guess.
I think he meant that only his family went to see it,it was a big flop at the box office after all. I might be wrong but I guess that Connery regrets making the film since it was not valued at least at the time.
I have two interviews with Sean Connery, in which he names this film as his favourite work of all. So I guess it was just a joke about the bad box-office results.
No he was neither of those things, he was just a policeman who was having a nervous breakdown brought on by all the horrors he'd witnessed through his job and the abused girl was the final straw!

This film is such an absolute masterpiece, and not only is it painstaking work to do something like this, but to get it done for a million bucks in thirty days is unthinkable!
After finishing a project like this, it has to be disheartening when four billion people immediately dismiss it out of hand, and more of them stayed in to watch Sonny and Cher that week.
He knows that most of the films he gets paid for are crap, and he knows that The Untouchables should be punishable by death, so it has to sting when the universe keeps pushing him to those projects just to keep on his career path.
