Mean Streets ain't that mean!

I hope this was done a a prequel to all the Mafia/Godfather/big crime movies that started in the 70's, because this one is only interesting as it's early Scorsese/Keitel/De Niro.
Other than than, it's rather long and sleepy...with too much character development for a 2+ hour movie.
This one's a 6 at best, mainly for those 3: Scorsese/Keitel/De Niro!

Haha, "too much" character development. Never heard that cited as a problem before.

Happens often...honest!
The story gets carried away with the lead/leading actor, and the plot itself gets second treatment.

So what's exactly your problem with the character development aspect? Mean Streets is a character study, a fantastic one I may add. Sleepy? I honestly can't wait to re-watch it.

reply

For me, the story got away in this one..too much concentrating on Keitel and Francis of Assissi, etc.
Enjoy it again...that's what this database is all about: comments/opinions.
Hey...everyone's different.

The story is secondary, that's true, but it's not really about the story. As you rightly note, it's a character driven piece, and for me it's judged and delivered brilliantly. But on top of that it also serves kind of as a manifesto of Scorsese's raw cinematic potential, which is so exciting in this movie.

Flanders I love this film but I think there has been for me one instance of over developing character in cinema for me: Topsy Turvy

I find the amount of people who think this hyper energetic movie is boring or "long and sleepy", rather astonishing.

Teeny tiny little attention spans!!!

The film is so lame tame and downright boring now. I dont doubt it was a hit for its era cause thats how movies were then.

reply

You don't know what movies were then, ya *beep* lout. Who are you? You're a *beep* nobody, spouting out words like you're some scholar of the era. Don't believe the hype, child, just cause you were born in 1990 doesn't mean you're better than your predecessors. It just means your mommy and daddy didn't have a sweaty night before the tail end of the century began.

Yeah, see.........back then movies were built around original stories/scripts, proper character development, compelling character-driven drama, and creating palpable and immersing atmosphere leading to timeless and memorable movies. So unlike how movies are made these days, where priority is given to expensive CGI effects, sound effects, and pretty faces, with little to no interest in anything else that make a movie complete.

We've come a long way indeed
