I know it's possible to die from a high fall into water.
Heck, people do it all the time in that very city when jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge.
But what bothered me even as a kid when I first saw it is that Davis's stunt double obviously made the actual jump himself, meaning it had to have been safe enough for a stuntman.
So why would it kill Davis, who is implied to be in peak condition and an ex-soldier?
I always interpreted his death that he simply dint wanna live no more.

That one kinda bugged me too. Maybe he was afraid of heights and passed out. Then drown.
Thing is that scene is soon followed up with one of the greatest of all time, the “a mans got to know his limitations” scene. And all is forgotten.
Actually, Harry’s line right after Davis’s death is the movie’s best:
“Briggs was right. You guys don’t have enough experience.”
I assume it was the sudden impact... =D
Really though I figured his fatally injured himself when against the bike as it hit the water.
