Harry Callahan and the rogue cops
I watched this movie countless times before realizing this is the one Dirty Harry movie where detective Callahan finally shows fear. It is the scene where Callahan is sitting on his bed waiting for Lieutenant Briggs to show up. Callahan keeps his .44 magnum revolver in his hand and looks apprehensive and nervous. Even though he is a big man, 6'4", well-armed, he is alone and outnumbered by at least three, well-armed, professional, police officers. And Callahan doesn't know if there are more than the three, remaining motorcycle rogue cops.
Callahan makes the point at the movies' end, "Briggs was right...you guys are inexperienced."
So true.
Throughout the movie, the four motorcycle police officers are well-trained, highly movtivated, and in great physical shape. But their street-wise inexperience works against them. The first death is obvious, when one of them stands directly in front of the door of the criminal hideout then gets shot through the door.
During the fight scene in the decrepit carrier, MIDWAY, one of the rogue motorcycle cops fires his revolver almost indiscriminately, blowing out all his ammunition. He carried only 18 rounds, if you count all his shots. Callahan always fired deliberately, knowing his own ammunition supply. Callahan carried three reloads in additon to those rounds already in his revolver, giving him 24 shots.
Had the four rogue motorcycle cops been experienced, street-wise with five to ten years under their belts, then they would have been street warrior cops and Callahan would have definitely met his end. But Callahan was able to use their own inexperience against them. It also helped that Callahan was a big man and he literally beat the rogue motorcycle cop to death.
