I didn't get the scene with the pimp, did I miss something? (spoiler)

Why was it necessary to show the pimp murder a hooker. The scene went on for far too long, for characters that were hardly necessary for that much introduction. It seems they could have cut straight to the pimp being killed and it would have made no difference in plot really.

Also, the scene didn't really make sense, cause why would the pimp, wait for the hooker to come to her home, then kill her in a cab, right in front of the cab driver? Why not wait for her to get of the cab, and wait for it to leave, before going up to her, killing her and taking her money?

Did I miss something?

No I don't think you missed anything. It was just an excuse to add more gratuitous violence to the picture. Also the was it was shot was particularly sick--shooting up her dress to turn on the guys in the audience.

This is one of the most classic murder scenes in movie history! Imagine, pouring a can of drain cleaner down someones throat! It just characterizes how cruel the pimp was and didn't even care that the cabbie was there.
Kind of made the audience feel that he deserved to get executed by the hit squad. But, as history shows, these squads tend to go too far and start rubbing out those who do not deserve it. That's the whole point of the movie.
Still....Drain Cleaner!!!

The "Hi-Fi" murders in which the murderers were said to have been inspired by this scene is a very disturbing story.

Obviously, it's to show us the motivations of the vigilante cops. I mean, wouldn't you be bothered to see the cops killing a man "just" for being a pimp?

Exactly! It sets the tone as to why the police are tired of playing games with criminals. Instead of in and out of jail, out of existence, which honestly is the way it should be, for murder, rape, pedophilia and so on.
