Burt Bacharach just not the right composer for Lost Horizon

I am a moderate fan of this film, which didn't deserve the total trashing it has received over the years. Basically, the era for this type of thing was clearly over by 1973, so probably nothing could have saved it. Though I'm an ardent fan of Burt Bacharach/Hal David, and really like two of the songs here, they just were not the right composers for a musical treatment of Lost Horizon. When I think of Bacharach, Tibet does not come to mind. If you wanted to do a Bacharach musical in the early 70's, I think some Neil Simon type thing would be more compatible, like a musical version of Plaza Suite. Dionne Warwick could even have appeared. I don't know who at the time could have handled this, but Bacharach was the wrong choice.

I don't care for the musical numbers, but I think BB's original score is quite well done, especially in the beginning with the the epic, widescreen action scenes of the rebels taking over the airport and the long flight to Shangri La. ... And just pay attention to the lofty, high strings when the ancient priest/guru/lama reveals his history to Conway - this musical passage alone puts BB in the exalted company of Alfred Newman.
