DVD

Did anybody else find the DVD rather disappointing. Surely this film deserves a special edition with a decent commentary and features? As there so much in it that can be talked about by the people who made it, a decent Dvd could help give the film the recognition that it deserves.

Not at all........Altman while making this film was at his most creative and things were popping out of his imagination....if he were to articulate it, he would have been lying because he was probably stoned on grass which helped him relax and he was not fond of remembering...During dailies of most of his films at Lion's Gate, most of the cast and crew stayed around and discussed everything and Robert was just great, picking up ideas as people prattled and he loved his actors....he got more research, I think for those evenint dailies.
I doubt if he or anyone could remember any one event honestly...To examine or dissect his films is to look for something you have no idea exists.
The same for CALIFORNIA SPLIT which I loved as much as all of his films.
He could direct right now and still not know what he intended, but still know exactly what he had in mind..He is a naughty child..
There is nothing dissapointing about his work.

I agree. I found this DVD on sale this weekend and bought it right away. Did see it on TV many years ago and remembered I liked it.
After having seen it again I must conclude two things:

1. (And this one is fairly obvious if you've seen K Street as well) Elliott Gould is the single coolest actor in the world ever!

2. Robert Altman, when on form, can do little or no wrong!

Love it.

Mossbie, he was talking about the extras on the DVD not the film itself! It helps if you read people's posts before commenting on them.

thanks adamus, i think mossbie might be from the 'it reminded me of dolphins but i don't know why?' school of thought.

why do people think that analysising something automatically makes the process clinical? it is possible to keep your love for something and be able to explore it properly. even if there was a commentary of altman recalling his grass smoking and randomness or telling us that 'it is what you think it is, man' it would helpful for younger people who missed out on the seventies.....
