Confused about the money

OK, I understand that in the beginning Terry took the money from Augustine, and then near the end, Mrs. Wade returns the money to Augustine. Then she goes to join Terry in Mexico. So did she return the money to save Terry's life, and then they were going to live happily ever after... with no money? That doesn't feel right, but that's the impression I got. Or did I miss something?

No, Ilene sent Augustine the money so that they wouldn't kill Marlowe... They didn't need the money since Ilene is filthy rich anyway from her husband who died. Because her husband died, they didn't need Augustine's cash.

I don't think she cared whether they killed Marlowe or not. It was clear that Augustine wasn't buying the suicide, and so she gave him back his money so he'd leave her and her boyfriend alone. Marlowe just happened to be in there.

If she cared about Marlowe, she wouldn't have left him lying on the road like that in the next scene. He thought she had done it for him, and waking up in the hospital was his wake-up call.

I didn't think she was aware of him giving chase. She also appeared oddly euphoric - more so than merely relieved/happy that her brutish, alcoholic husband had taken himself out of the picture, & she'd saved the asses of both lover Lennox & hired hand Marlowe.

I thought her husband was broke.

No, he had money. He was a published author with a fine house and was even loaning money to gangsters. He could write a big check to an angry doctor like that. His hangup was that he was "all used up" as a writer, which was why he did himself in.

Ah, right. Thanks for the clarification. I would have watched it again to answer my own questions, but I don't own it. I'm at the mercy of IFC's schedule.
