This movie is really great, Sterling Hayden's best performance and all of the cast's improvisations and the whole meditation on the 40s butting heads with the 70s was really interesting. I liked the washed out cinematography in this movie, it sort of puts you in Marlowe's haze. The end is phenomenal. A perfect movie if I ever saw one. RIP Robert Altman.

shareI agree. I'm more of a fan of modern movies myself, but this film really surprised me. From the first scene, Gould's nonchalant manner grabbed me, and my eyes were glued to the screen through the whole flick. The story was engrossing, and the ending was great. Definitely on my top 10.

But it is true, this would never make the top 250. Subtlety, character study, metaphor, satire, bleak humour, one of the original movie anti-heroes; these are not things that win the acclaim of the largely ignorant public.
Like someone said above, V for Vendetta is in the top 250?!? What up with that?!? Click on my profile to read what I thought of that movie.
