Deleted scene, what became of it?

When I saw this film for the first time at Cornell in 1974, there was an ending that I've never seen since. My recollection is a little hazy, so I'm hoping that someone will be able to fill in the missing pieces.

At the very end, Marlowe is driving down a dirt road in his jeep, and suddenly he comes to a house. He gets out of the jeep and walks towards the house, and someone says "Hey, it's Elliot Gould!" The rest of the cast is there, all out of character, and the scene segues into a cast party.

The only other time I remember seeing an ending like that was in O Lucky Man!

That sounds like an Altmanesque outtake included in the first run. Compared with the way LG ends in the final cut, I would call such an ending a serious buzz kill.

Are you thinking of the ending of MASH (the film), where the names of the actors are announced over the camp loudspeakers?

The scene you're thinking of is in Nashville (1975). Gould does a cameo at a party hosted by Henry Gibson's character, and people are starstruck, saying, "He was married to Barbra Streisand!"

Yeah, that kind of snarkiness represents everything I hate about Nashville. I'm glad it didn't ruin Altman's best film, The Long Goodbye.

Why did you hate that in Nashville? Elliott Gould didn't play anyone but himself in that movie.
