Improvisation?

Did it seem like much of the dialogue here was improvised? The conversations were fascinating and often seemed to spin in directions that might not have been in the script. Either way, the dialogue was remarkable -- as were the performances.

Particularly memorable is the scene where Marlowe drops his cigarette and Mr. Wade picks it up, all the while carrying on the conversation. I love those naturalistic moments in Altman films.

Yes.

p.s. it's directed by Robert Altman.

Yes it did feel quite natural, with some improvisation - I love improvisation in films, they can bring out some fantastic moments - Like in Blade Runner, the line "lost like tears in the rain" wasn't even in the script. I read that the scene where Marlowe puts ink all over his face was improvised, I loved that scene!

I didn't realise there was improvisation in "Blade Runner" of all films, but I'll watch it again with that in mind. The ability and license to improvise shows evidence of a trusting director and a strong cast here.

Indeed. Altman gave his actors a lot of free reign, and it made for better movies. Mutual respect is a good thing.
