Yeah he was tough in this film, he was perfect and made you believe his character was straight from a pulp novel ..he did a great job

He reminded me of someone who could have been a do wop singer in the late '50's but who branched out.

I loved him in this movie, I think he's an early version of the crazy characters Joe Pesci always plays in Scorsese movies. The first scene he's funny until he smacks his girlfriend with a Coke bottle, then you realize how dangerous he is. The second scene I couldn't stop laughing when tells Marlowe how he apologized to his girlfriend and then wants everyone to take their clothes off to prove how truthful Marlowe is.

It's interesting that you say this, because for years after I saw "The Long Goodbye" I had it in my mind that this role was in fact played by the same actor who played the Wise Guy / loan shark in "Mean Streets". That actor was in fact Richard Romanus, not Mark Rydell, but somehow it just seems that they were the same person!
