Sterling Hayden..

..stole this movie. Hands down, the greatest depiction of a down and out alcoholic put to celluliod.

He was great in everything he did.

I know I'm shouting, I like to shout.

What you and me's gonna do is have an old fashioned man to man drinkin' party!

There, daddy, do I get a gold star?

reply

Yeah, I liked that line--and I'm glad Marlowe said--'well I'll have what you're drinking'. & I loved that bottle encased in ice.

reply

true. I didn't even know it was him until I saw the credits and did a double-take. Completely transformed himself for this role.

reply

Yup. Personally living near Hollywood i can't stand 97% of actors. They tend to wear they're *horse manure* on their sleeve. Reading Haydens bio however, he comes across as one rare badass son of a gun. It's actually possible to use the word "integrity" and "actor" in the same sentence when speaking of him.

He was a fantastic actor.
A really great performance.

I know Dr. V (Henry Gibson) had to have something on Wade, for Wade not to re-act to Dr. V's vicious slap. But what? (spoilers) Wade wasn't a murderer.
His non-reaction made an already interesting character that much more mysterious. (I wonder how Gibson & Hayden prepared for this scene).

reply

"reading his bio" - do you perhaps know his auto-bio? It's called »Wanderer« and I think it's great.

He wrote a good novel, too.

Sterling Hayden brought a unique charachter to each role. I could not begin to list "favorities" although J.D. Ripper, General, USAF, Deceased would be among the top.

1979 he saved my life when his boat "Wanderbird" I think hauled my small sailboat= a Nordic Folkboat, from running aground between San Francisco and Ano Nuevo Point. He invited me on board for a glass "Paddy's Irish Whisky" and sent me on my way. He looked pretty much like his charachter "Roger Wade" from this movie- cap, beard, tosseled clothes. I have been writing a short story about that experience.

Anyway, he was a great man and a fine actor.

Awesome story. Let's raise a toast to the Sterl.

I remember he gave some extraordinary hour-long interviews with Tom Snyder on NBC's post-midnight "Tomorrow" talk show. He came across in real life with all the same amazing power of his character in this movie. Truly riveting!
