Who had Marty's money that Terry supposedly stole, and who gave it back so that Marty would set Marlowe free?

How utterly weird that someone ask the same question I was about to ask. Weird that the movie is nearly forty years old and the same question was asked just a day earlier.
Anyway, I know Mrs. Wade returned it but was still scratching my head as to why. Didn't she run off to Mexico to be with Harry? Did she feel guilty Marlowe was paying the price for Harry's stunt? I wonder how short-lived that guilt was when she found how Marlowe left his old pal floating in the koi pond.
