Any suggestions for similar movies?

I saw this movie for the first time not too long ago and I have to say this is one of the best movies I've ever seen. I'm wondering if anyone can suggest some movies in a similar vein. I've seen a good bit of noir from the 40s and 50s and I enjoy those films but I prefer this film's more modern take on the genre. I really enjoy the overall cynicism of this film and of course Elliott Gould's performance is amazing. Plus this has to be one of the coolest "LA" movies I've seen. The way they shoot the city is just perfect.
So any suggestions? A friend of mine suggested Chinatown, and while I think it's definitely a good movie it didn't really strike a nerve with me like the Long Goodbye did. I also heard that I should check out To Live and Die in L.A. but I haven't had a chance yet.
What do you all think?

Hi! I`d recommend The Big Lebowski. The Dude abides.

"No!You`re the ruler of the galaxy!Show a little taste!"

If it's the style you liked I'd recommend Pulp Fiction even (I'm sure you've heard of it) certain aspects are similar. Of coarse the Third Man is a big influence (it's a much older and definitely influential film noir) and even the Maltese Falcon on a lesser scale.

The Parallax View. Less humour, more paranoia, equal amount of 70's coolness!

I'd have to recommend Jackie Brown, Killing of a Chinese Bookie, Bugsy, California Split, The Player, The Big Picture, Sunset Blvd., Sweet Smell of Success, Double Indemnity, Laura, Fletch, Foul Play, Breathless, Band of Outsiders, Silver Streak, Le Cercle Rouge, Le Samourai, Fat City, Hammett, Chungking Express, The Hustler, Murder My Sweet, Devil in a Blue Dress, L.A. Confidential, Croupier, Farewell My Lovely, The Big Sleep, Strangers on a Train, Kiss Me Deadly, The Maltese Falcon, The Thin Man, Out of the Past, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Dead Again, Basic Instinct, Where the Buffalo Roam, Shampoo, Electra Glide in Blue, Wise Blood, Prizzi's Honor, Bad Timing, and many more...

Yeah, after watching The Long Goodbye, I immediately had an urge to watch "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?"

What's the matter with you?

You should check out "Night Moves," with Gene Hackman, 1975. Very cool private eye, every '70s, very LA, then very Florida.

See ya.

I would recommend 'Body Heat' and 'China Town'.

i thought this movie was more of a crime comedy than all the films everyone seems to be suggesting. it has more humor than gritiness. as such, although also not a comedy, "branded to kill."

"Moving target" for the modernish LA-noir style
"Klute" for the bit of neuro-psyco atmosphere

An article in an old movie magazine compared this to ALPHAVILLE and POINT BLANK
