The film's orginal screwed-up release

I remember that when the film first came out there was a big screw-up with the release. Just before it was supposed to hit the theaters it was previewed at some sort of mystery fan's convention. The audience's reaction was so hostile that the studio got cold feet and shelved the release. When it was finally released months later it's publicity campaign was completely reworked and it was marketed as a comedy.

This is all from distant memory so I may be a bit fuzzy. Anyone else have anything to add?

Yeah that must've been when they did that famous MAD magazine poster with all the speech bubbles. Altman's film's are tough to market.
