Couldn't agree more about Altman. In terms of modern filmmakers, PT Anderson's films borrow a lot from the Altman aesthetic, (both Boogie Nights and Magnolia scream of Nashville).
What struck me about TLG was the dreamy aesthetic of the cinematography, particularly the way the lights sort of sprawl and blur on the film. I immediately recognized the same lighting in Anderson's Punch-Drunk Love.
Very different type of film in a narrative sense, but visually captivating and owes a lot of its look to TLG.
