I'm having trouble trying to find a particular version of the song

I've been having difficulty finding a certain version of the 'Long Goodbye' song. It's the one that plays right after the scene where Lennox first appears and the guard does his Barbara Stanwyck impression. Then we cut to Marlowe driving to the supermarket and the 'Long Goodbye' song has a female singer and a piano playing. Does anyone know who the singer is and/or where I can find this version?

Last year Quartet Records released the soundtrack with most of the versions heard in the film;

Unfortunately the CD sold out quite fast, but you can probably find a copy on Ebay or from one of the various sites selling soundtracks. (I think it's going for crazy prices though)

I have the CD, & I think the specific version of The Long Goodbye you are referring to is only found within a 10 minute medley on the CD - most of the versions you hear in the beginning of the film are in the medley, & are no longer than what you hear in the film. Either the master tapes of the complete renditions were lost, or only brief snippets of each version were recorded to fit within the intro titles of the film, as Marlowe drives to the supermarket to get the cat food. I don't know, but reading the notes on Quartet's website, it seems that the weren't able to find all of the tapes containing all of the music recorded for the film. (The CD is still worth getting though - it's a great soundtrack)

It's a shame, because I was looking forward to hearing that same version of the song that you are enquiring about, only to find that it's roughly 8 seconds long on the CD, same as the bit you hear in the film.

Well that's disappointing. That little sequence in the car is very 'classic noir' for me, and that version of the song is probably my favourite. Oh well, at least I can look forward to the movie finally getting a release on blu ray here in the UK. Thanks for the response

You can actually listen to abridged versions of the songs on the link that oldcodes_newchaos mentions above.
The version around the guard scene is sung by Jack Sheldon, and the one right after while Marlowe is driving is by Clydie King. Both songs are on the CD, complete. They are also in the 10 minute medley, maybe slightly different, but the singers are the same.

There are also some uploads on YouTube that you can check out, the Jack Sheldon version is up there, just search for Long Goodbye Soundtrack.

As oldcodes_newchaos mentioned, the CD is hard to get hold of, I saw it recently on AMAZON for 175 bucks, on a Japanese auction site for ¥9900.

Good Luck
