Butt-out already

That constant cigarette in his mouth just made me sick.

Oh, you poor thing. You'd better go lie down.

'The Sound of Music' twice an hour, and 'Jaws' 1, 2 and 3.

Does anybody know if Gould actually smoked? I smoked for years, and I'm pretty good at spotting in a movie when someone isn't inhaling: the smoke comes out of their mouth in a dense cloud, and it does that every time Gould "smokes" in this movie. I know it's a trivial point, but it would be pretty ironic, given all the cigarettes consumed in this flick.

For some reason, it always bothered me when I was younger that he didn't inhale in this movie (Gould only smokes (smoked) cigars in real life, which the smoke is not inhaled)

But now I like the fact that he doesn't inhale in this film. I've never seen Elliott Gould inhale in any other movie, so I would think that it's a thing that's not necessarily connected to Marlowe.

Thanks for that info LLP -- I suspected as much (that he isn't inhaling). Another intriguing aspect of Gould's "smoking" is that he handles a cigarette like a veteran smoker -- usually another dead giveaway that an actor isn't a smoker in real life. I guess all the cigarettes he consumed in the movie gave him enough practice to look like a veteran smoker.

I agree. It was distracting and disgusting. Cigarettes suck, and even in 1973 it wasn't cool to smoke that much--just dumb.

the new dvd edition they're releasing has the cigarettes digitally removed
