sharei think it's hentai beach. could be german, maybe not.
shareAquavit....it's a swedish drink, like vodka, usually hinted with Caraway seed, hence why Marlowe says it tastes like "caraway". Allborg is one brand I know of. It's not too bad. But you have to have it ICE cold. Otherwise it is a little strong. Thus, why Roger has his enconsed in a block of ice.
shareI had to find a comment to reply to about Roger Wade (played by Sterling Hayden). This movie sticks in my mind for one reason and one reason only. It affected me (has been burned into my memory) because of Sterling Hayden's performance. I don't recall (although probably have seen) many of his other films in my 51 year lifetime. But this one is just seared in my memory - because of his performance in it.
Does anyone else remember it with such passion or is it just me? A big man - in more ways than you can say - for this performance!
I have to agree the performance from Sterling Hayden is Tremendous, and overlooked. I think that because this film was made during the seventies when fillmakers where taking the mold and pulverising it into dust that many people forgot it even happened. Don't get me wrong I am absolutly greatfull for every film made by anyone who wanted to see what they could do. Sterling hayden was a brave choice for Altmen and he worked, he worked really well. As for the thread yes the booze he is drinking is Aquiviete, and to get the true experience, take a large milk or juice carton ( the kind with the pirimade top) cut the top where it starts to pyrimade off insert a fresh bottle of Aquiviete then fill it with water. Place in a freezer, after the water is frozen. If you want to save the box be carefull how you peel the carton away if not... Go nuts. You can also do this with any high proof alchol, such as vodka. If the booze is in a clear bottle you can add different food coloring to the water for fun.

That's ok with me.
Just watched it again after quite awhile. Hayden was unreal--so good--he had all the mannerisms of the tortured, scary, brilliant writer. And Hayden really played himself--he was, in fact, a hard-drinking novelist--he wrote sea novels. So I agree--his performance is the stand-out in this movie. I would've loved to go drinking with him.

Akvavit (Swedish spelling) is not really a drink, but a snaps. Normally pretty strong, around 40-45 % alcohol. You traditionally drink it to crayfish at midsummers night or to herring. It supposed to be chilled but not iced (lose a lot of the flavours when too cold). There are a couple of versions, but "kummin" is always in it. The name comes from latin aqua vitae (water of life). We drink it in Sweden, Denmark and Norway. The correct glass is a "Älghultare" and you drink it like a shot, tossing your head back.

All this said, it's still pretty cool to ice it and sip it like a drink at the beach having a man-to-man talk.
It's OK with me.

shareIf anyone goes to Aquavit in NYC. They make their own. Distinctive stuff. Fresh! Best you'll find in the USA.
Though, yelling BALLS BABY BALLS! After each yank, yes, while the spirit calls for it, or really, yells for it, I must say: the staff is mostly Scandi, so they sorta frown.
Sounds fun.
