The ending reminded me of the ending of 'The Third Man'

That final scene just before the titles was almost identical to the end of "The Third Man" except for the season. Even the car stopping, waiting and moving on seemed reminiscent with that of Welles' classic.

Was this an homage to Welles by Altman? It's to similar for coincidence but nobody seems to have mentioned it.

Absolutely. And that would fit very well into the film's whole self-referential old Hollywood nostalgia.

There, daddy, do I get a gold star?

I agree. It was a great film and it really captured the goofy times, too.

Now surely the OP is not one of THOSE people who think Welles ghost directed The Third Man... is he?

Thanks! That's what I thought. "Hey this looks like the last scene in The Third Man.", a great movie.
