The last time this was on UK TV
I remember watching the beginning of this film back in 1991, when I was 12. That scene in the beginning was a very tense and brutal affair. I can recall the killer putting together the pieces of his machine gun, and you can't even see his face (which is why this film is a whodunit). I also remember that middle-aged guy looking suspiciously at him before getting blown away, like the rest of the passengers. After seeing that scene, I went to bed, because in those days, my parents were strict, as they did not like me to stay up. This was on ITV (UK commercial TV channel), but in the mid-80s, BBC1 (ITV's rival) showed it as well. We have another channel in the UK called Five. In the late '90s/early '00s, they used to show plenty of thrillers/action films from the '70s and '80s. I am sure that at one point, they showed The Laughing Policeman.
I live in Britain, but I know that TLP is available on DVD in the US. As I've bought stuff from there in the past, it should be no problem for me to get an import copy of TLP. Another reason I like to check it out is because of Walter Matthau. I've never been a major fan of his, but I liked the other crime thrillers which he churned out in the '70s such as the clever Charley Varrick and The Taking Of Pelham 123 (which partly inspired Reservoir Dogs). Perhaps he could have done more films in a similar vein.
