Begining scene I didn't understand

When Mule, Badass, and Meadows are on the train, Meadows is sleeping and they point to something. All of a sudden, Meadows gets up running from them, then comes back to his seat sobbing. What happened?

reply

He just got busted for having the carrotts up his sleeve is my quess.

reply

Actually, they were cigars.

reply

Were they cigars? It looked like he had something on his wrist and that Mule and Badass realized Meadows had shoplifted something again. (On the bus they saw Meadows eating Mallo Cups and then Beer Nuts and wondered if he'd shoplifted those.)

They were carrots which he stole from the old lady with the shopping cart.

As somebody else pointed out, they were the carrots that he had stolen from that old lady with the shopping cart. We now have had it established that Meadows was an habitual thief, a kleptomaniac. Had a bad case of sticky fingers.

Why did he suddenly bolt? I think he was just coming out of a nap when Buddusky and Mule noticed the pilfered carrots protruding from his sleeve. Probably in a stupor, he thought they were the police come to bust him for shoplifting or theft, which he had had trouble with before he joined the Navy (as he had explained to them). So it was a case of him being momentarily disoriented. In a state of fright and panic, he took off running.

reply

I knew they were carrots but didn't know why he got up and ran. Thanks for the explanation everyone.

reply

YES, indicating a juvenile or immature reaction to getting "caught".
