the fight in the bathroom

does anyone know why Jack Nicholson starts that big fight with all those Army guys in the bathroom? I'm guessing it was because the Navy and the Army don't really like each other (like when Jack mutters about drill sergeants "maggot-this and maggot-that")

:D~

Well...he's annoyed because Mulhall has exploded about them mucking around and not getting to the brig in time...so when he sees the marines walking by he decides to vent his frustration.
Utter classic scene, by the way....

"Yes, the marines and naval officers don't like each other."

They're not officers, they're petty officers, which is an enlisted rank.

I figure it was also a way to ensure that they wasted more time instead of just staying put until the train was ready to leave. I mean Mule said at that point they weren't going to do anything else, so this was his attempt to guarantee that wasn't true.

They were Marines, not Army. Aside from the natural enmity between jarheads and sailors, part of Buddusky's motivation for picking a fight with them was his bitterness (and helplessness) in knowing that the meek young screwup he was taking to the brig was going to spend the next few years being brutalized by sadistic marine guards.

As others have pointed out, because Marines and Navy don't like each other. But also, because Marines serve as gaurds in Naval prisons, and have a reputation for beating the hell out of the Navy inmates. They mention this in the movie, how the Marine gaurds are gonna beat the hell out of Randy Quaid. So I think he picked the fight to give Quaid's character the experience of beating the hell out of some Marines, something to help hime get through his time, that he can think back on fondly for the 8 years they will be beating on him.

Thanks skyko2000 - best explanation yet !

That which does not Kill me makes me Stranger

Sure! Thanks! My uncle was in a navy prison, and just like the movie says, got beaten constantly by the marine guards. They do really generally seem to hate each other.

Happy there's a thread on this. Thought something went over my head!

Heh, I think he either says, "I call it Karate" -- trash talk before breaking out the fancy moves -- or "I call Hai Karate"...maybe a reference to Mule's aftershave?

You can't always rely on subtitles. I have played movies many times with them and words are often changed or omitted. Amazing how much of the low dialogue you can pick up however.

Jeez, those other guys were Marines, Jarheads. Swabies and Jarheads are subject to interservice rivalry, you know?
