Connection to the Royal Tenenbaums?
What's the connection? Other than Ashby and Anderson's similar style.

shareThe phrase "let's shag ass" appears in both films. I've read that Anderson is a big fan of this film, so it seems likely that he would take that line from this film.

When Royal says "Let's shag ass" I immeadiately thought of "The Last Detail" one of my favorite films from the '70's. it makes perfect sense to me that Wes Anderson would be a fan since his films, particularly Tennenbaums and Life Aquatic have that '70's feel to them

But the similarity was just stated above.
shareWrong sir, it was simply stated that Anderson stole a line. That in no way shows a similarity between the two film makers. Also, I would like to restate the above assertion. Wes Anderson can't hold a candle to Hal Ashby.
shareAs much as I love Ashby, he's never done anything as perfect as Rushmore or The Royal Tenenbaums. Still, without Ashby, those films probably would never have been made.

I just read an interview with Anderson that said he would watch this film with his Darjeeling Limited collaborators (Jason Schwartzman and Roman Coppola) while working on DL. Makes perfect sense. He said something to the effect of "it's a movie about three guys on a train with no real plot" -- and for the gentleman saying that Anderson can't hold a candle to Ashby, I think you need to open your eyes and let down your guard. Nobody is suggesting that Anderson is BETTER or has SURPASSED Ashby (although I would suggest both). The statement was that Anderson was heavily influenced by Ashby, which is very clear in his work.
