Movies from the 70's are depressing

I don't need a hollywood happy ending all the time but I swear to god between 1968-1975 it was illegal in Hollywood to write a happy ending. Look at some of Jack Nicholsons more popular movies from that period!! Easy Rider, Chinatown, the Last Detail, Carnal Knowledge, One flew over the cuckoos Nest, not a happy ending in the bunch.

I will say that that the movies of the '70's, especially during the first half of the decade, are pretty interesting. The reflect the times and the movie business. Hollywood didn't know what else to do but open the door to "gothamized" movies and blaxploitation films that were wildly successful. This was before the later '70's blockbusters like Jaws, Rocky and the granddaddy of all, Star Wars.

Yes, it was a depressing time. These films reflect that AND the changes in the movie business. After years of losing its audience to TV and the breakup of studio-owned theaters, Hollywood had to do something. It opened the door to these types of films and blaxploitation films.

Also, by this time, the east coast cities showed the effects of the Depression, WWII, the rise if the suburbs, poorly planned civic improvement projects and the continued loss of its manufacturing base to the South and then overseas.

The early 70's was the most "real" era in motion pictures, happy endings only occur in fiction, in the end every dies, that's life
