Did Jesus have the kinds of doubts expressed in the song Gethsemane? Is that portrayed in the bible at all?

reply

According to some of the apostles, He asked that the "cup" be spared him in garden, so yes, I guess He did.

I think in the bible there is a scene where Satan tries to win him over. "Follow me and you will not have tzo day" or something to that accord. In essence, it´s a similar kind of self-struggle than depicted in the Gethsemane scene. I might be way off here, though, since I don´t know much about the bible. Maybe I remember it wrong.

Satan appearing in Gethsemane was in Mel Gibson's movie but not the Bible. It might be one of those "apocryphal scriptures" like Gospel of Thomas, I suppose.

Jesus asks if it is possible, not to have to drink from this cup (a figure of speech of the time, meaning pass through suffering). That's all. The musical just expands on this a lot to make this song.

Yeah, Satan's appearance was before the garden. Personally, I'd just rather he never shown up at all (the temptation bit) but that's all water over the bridge now.

You're on the right path. Keep learning about the bible and you'll be fine.

It's a pivotal point in the gospels. Jesus, knowing what was going to happen to him, asks Father God to take the cup away from Him but then follows this up by saying 'not my will but Yours be done'.

Jesus was sure of his resurrection (he predicts it several times) but Jesus' death meant that Father and Son would be separated. Life was never meant to experience death and I feel sure that that's what Gethsemene is all about.

This is for anyone that may be wondering the same thing. Here is the passages in scripture.
Luke 22: 39-46
39Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. 40On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation." 41He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, 42"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." 43An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 44And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.[c]
45When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46"Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation."
36Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." 37He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me."
39Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."

Matthew 26:40-46
40Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter. 41"Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."
42He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done."
43When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.
45Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46Rise, let us go! Here comes my betrayer!"

Jesus had great doubts and sweated blood over his decision and asked God that if he could take away the cup that he had to drink from, except that it was God's will that it be done. All of the sentiments in Gethsame aren't expressed in the Bible, but are witty creations by Tim Rice of questions someone would really ask in a situation like that.

If they were sleeping, who heard what Jesus said in the garden?

I don't need you to tell me how good my coffee is. .

I am sure there are times not described in the gospels when Jesus told others about his life - for instance, what happened to him when he was tempted at the beginning of his ministry. We know that he explained to the two on the walk to Emmaus about how he fulfilled the prophesies of the Old Testament prophets - so this would account for how some of the more obscure details about his birth are known. Jesus spent time with his disciples after his resurrection before he ascended to Heaven, and I imagine much of this time was spent telling them things to help them better understand his purpose, his humanity, and his divinity.

Disciples: So you knew all along that you would rise from the dead?
Jesus: Yes, but I was still terrified of being separated from God and I even asked him if he would spare me from death on the cross.

"before adam and even sinned, they were immortal and would have lived forever, along with everyone else"

That's not what the Bible says. God Himself said that Adam had to be expelled from the Garden *before* he ate from the Tree of Life to become immortal. Man was always mortal and destined to die. The Bible is very specific on this.

Genesis 3:22-23

And the LORD God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.
