Just rewatched it after many years..
It is still brilliant. The songs, the drama, the VOCALS! You just need to keep in mind that it was mad in the 70tíes when it served other "issues" as well. (But you need to do it with other older films as well) But the idea to bring it on sceen as a theatre performance with all the just symbolic clothing etc was very good, eg. "chasing out of the temple", just a bunch of people pretending crowds and it works just right, you ae not drawn away from the action, songs..

The issue of crowds, popularity etc. is not that catchy now but still it´s very lively..

I voted it a perfect 10. I just re-watched it on Monday night for the first times since the 1970's and it is truly amazing! Much better than I even recalled. The vocals and the music is magnificent. I can't imagine anyone not enjoying the rockin' music. They should play the songs on the Classic Rock radio stations, it's that good.

Not sure what you meant by, "the issue of crowds, popularity, etc". It's hard not to love this movie if you like rock music at all. My current favorite songs are, "Touch Me, Jesus" followed by closely by "Hosanna" and "Every Thing's Alright".

I suppose it was meant to be a picture of a star, popularity, handling crowds, how politics works etc. Where the common mob makes someone special not taking care of what the person is really trying to say. Basicly what Judas´s saying in his first song. Once the crowds are out of your hands there´s little you can do. Than you can become a puppet to those who just need to manipulate the crowds.

I've always hated musicals but this movie is so good, it's on now on TCM. I gave it a 8 or 9.

IMDb is a poor view of ratings. Any yahoo can repeatedly vote a movie down, for whatever their reason may be.

This movie is a solid 7 and above, in most objective peoples minds. Though there are exceptions.

I always felt this was an 8. Based on feeling the staging and direction were flawed. About a 9 for performance. And of course a 10 for the music.
