But in all versions of JCS, I just find Jesus to be really annoying and whiny. So many of his lines are about wanting people to think about him, and wanting to be remembered.

This version of the story is Judas' POV, so Jesus doesn't always look sympathetic. Judas here thinks Christ doesn't get it. The whole concept is to portray Jesus and Judas as fully developed humans, not just biblical or mythic figures.
