I'm watching this on Sundance and read your posts. I remember when this film came out, most critics panned it. They had no idea what the director was going for, I didn't either. I didn't grow to understand this until many years later. This was quite an experimental way to place a blockbuster stage play on the big screen, with a big director. To take the actors go to Jerusalem with minimal sets and fanfare, just not to "act" but to experience it, and let audiences do the same, was unique at the time.
It's always a joy to watch Ted Neely, Carl Anderson (who was an understudy to the great Ben Vereen as Judas on stage, believe it or not!), Yvonne Elliman and the whole acting troupe are the best in their roles...
It knows what scares you. It has since the very beginning.
