ending?

what happened at the end of this movie? maybe i wasnt paying attention, but i have no clue what went down.

The cops shoot him dead. It was kind of abrupt though, he goes down and they immediately cut to the end credits...

Actually the director says that Ivan lives, although the actual person the movie is based on was killed in a police shootout.
